The ATP Oil Shale Plant Site in Gladstone, Australia - Aerial Photograph (circa 2000)
The Stuart Energy Demonstration Plant was the first large scale ATP with a rated throughput capacity of 6000 t/d of feed shale, producing 4500 bbl/d of oil. The purpose of the Stuart Energy R&D project was to demonstrate and prove the ATP technology for oil shale processing, as basis for a larger plant to be built at commercial scale. During the course of the demonstration program, the Stuart plant processed 2.6 million tonnes of shale and produced 1.65 million barrels of saleable product oils. The Stuart ATP Processor achieved design oil yield and operated above nameplate throughput capacity. The hydrotreated naphtha product was of very high quality with less than 1 ppm sulphur and less than 4 ppm nitrogen.
